This page is a resource for parents and students to review the important policies in my class.

- binder or folder to store papers
- loose-leaf notebook paper or notebook
- blue or black ink pens
- assignment notebook
- any homework
- independent reading book
- any book checked out for class that students need that day (vocabulary book, novel, literature book)
EXPECTATIONS AND CONSEQUENCES
EXPECTATIONS - These are rules students are expected to follow in my classroom.
1. Always arrive to class on time.
2. Come to class prepared with materials and be on task.
3. Listen to and follow teacher directions the FIRST time.
4. Treat your teacher and classmates respectfully.
5. Restore the classroom back to the way you found it before leaving it.
Also, how I handle things will depend on the special situation and special person(s) involved.
Please air your personal concerns after class. If you feel something is unfair or incorrect, tell me that you think it is unfair or incorrect after class and we will talk.
Feel free to do anything that does not cause a problem for anyone else or break a school rule.
CONSEQUENCES - These are the consquences students may receive for breaking a classroom rule.
Warning - All students deserve a chance to correct a mistake.
Loss of participation points - Students receive a particpation grade in my class. They will lose points toward that grade if they break a rule after a warning.
Take a break - Students will go to a back table and complete a Think Sheet that documents the problem and a short worksheet on a topic in language arts before they return to the class activities.
Detentions - Teacher detentions will take place before or after school in the LRC. Students will complete a one page report on a given topic during their detention.
Administative detentions are always held in Mrs. Andrews' room and an administrator is notified of the detention.
TARDIES AND ABSENCES
Students who have UNEXCUSED tardies will lose participation points. EXCUSED tardies will not be penalized.
Students who are absent will be able to make up work without penalty. Students are given two days for every one day absent to complete absent work.
*Long term assignments are due the day absent students return to school if the absent date falls on the due date.
Please email me if special circumstances arise.
LATE WORK - ONLY APPLIES TO WORK IN PULL-OUT LA OR LONG TERM ASSIGNMENTS! PASSES CANNOT BE USED IN REGULAR LA!
Students will be given one GIVE ME A BREAK homework pass for first trimester, one GIVE ME A BREAK homework pass for second trimester, and one GIVE ME A BREAK homework pass for third trimester.
GIVE ME A BREAK passes can be used to get out of one homework assignment.
GIVE ME A BREAK passes can also be used for a one day extension on a project without penalty. (*This may not be possible when there is a grade deadline for me!)
GIVE ME A BREAK passes may not be used on quizzes or tests.
*Students who keep their passes until the end of the semester can hand them in for extra credit.
DISCOVERY students may use team homework passes in my class.
SUMMIT students who have late work (and do not turn in a homework pass) will also incur a team penalty as the team will be notified of all late work in my class, which results in a team detention after three late assignments.
HEADINGS - This should be at the top of all papers handed in to me.

GRADES
Final language arts grades will be calculated based on the grade earned in my class and the grade earned in your regular classroom. Each grade will be weighted based on how much time was spent in each classroom.
Grades in my class will be composed of in class assignments and participation, homework, quizzes/tests, reading contracts, and projects (papers, speeches, etc.) My grades are based on points. They are not weighted.
Expect rubrics and specific grading criteria for all projects so that expectations are clear.
The scale is as follows:
A 100-90%
B 89-80%
C 79-70%
U 59%
PLAGIARISM AND CHEATING
Any student who commits plagiarism or is caught cheating will receive a zero for that assignment. There are no exceptions!
